How Orthotics Work

Biomechanical Correction

Orthotics are crafted to correct or accommodate biomechanical abnormalities in your feet and lower limbs. These abnormalities can include overpronation (rolling inward) or supination (rolling outward) of the feet during walking, which can lead to various problems.

Support and Stability

By providing additional support and stability, orthotics help control the motion of your feet. This ensures that your feet function in a more anatomically correct way, reducing stress on joints, muscles, and ligaments. They can also slow the progression of foot deformities such as bunions and hammertoes.

Pain Management

Orthotics help manage and alleviate pain in your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and lower back. They achieve this by reducing the excessive strain and pressure that can result from poor foot mechanics.

Gait Improvement

Orthotics optimize your gait (the way you walk) by promoting a more balanced and efficient stride. Correcting biomechanical irregularities ensures we are using our muscles and joints in the way they were intended to be used when we walk. This in turn will improve your overall mobility, reduce pain, and help treat a variety of foot issues.

Redistribution of Pressure

Orthotics redistribute the forces acting on your feet when you walk or stand. Redistributing pressure more evenly along the bottom of the foot prevents certain areas from bearing excessive weight, which can lead to calluses, corns, and other foot issues.

Customization

Orthotics are customized to fit your unique foot shape and specific needs. This personalized approach ensures that they provide the right level of support and correction precisely where it’s required.

Injury Prevention

Orthotics can play a role in injury prevention by reducing the risk of overuse injuries, sprains, stress fractures, and muscle imbalances. They are commonly used by athletes to enhance performance and reduce the risk of sports related injuries.

Long-Term Benefits

When used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, orthotics can offer long-term benefits by helping to prevent or slow down the progression of certain foot conditions and improving overall foot health.

People of all ages benefit from orthotics! Custom orthotics are not limited to a specific age group – people of all ages can benefit from them. Here’s why:

Children: Orthotics can help address developmental issues, correct alignment problems, and provide support during periods of rapid growth. Children may require orthotics to prevent future foot and posture issues, even if they're not currently experiencing pain. Many foot conditions are genetic, so if parents have foot problems, their children may be at risk of developing the same issues. Orthotics can help correct these early on, ensuring proper foot development and avoiding long-term complications.

Adults: Whether you’re an athlete, someone with an active lifestyle, or someone who spends extended periods on your feet, orthotics can provide relief from pain, improve foot function, and prevent injuries.

Seniors: Orthotics can alleviate discomfort associated with age-related conditions, such as arthritis, and promote stability and balance.

Common Orthotic Questions

What can I expect at my appointment?

Your chiropodist will begin by doing a biomechanical assessment, checking the range of motion of your joints while you sit and then checking the position of your feet while you stand. The next step will be a gait assessment: watching the way your feet move when you walk. Your chiropodist will then take 3-dimensional images of your feet, using either a laser scan or plaster of paris. After your exam, your chiropodist will create a plan to realign the malfunctioning areas. The 3D images of your feet will be sent to our accredited lab, along with a prescription that details the raw medical grade materials that will be used in the manufacture of your orthotics. Your orthotics are truly custom, and you will never receive ones that are “prefabricated” or “off the shelf”. We encourage follow up visits and annual checkups to ensure everything is working as it should be!

What conditions are treated with custom orthotics?

Orthotics are designed to control the mechanical instability of your feet, much like eye glasses control the instability or weakness in our eyes. They will not change the underlying structure of the foot. Orthotics may be beneficial for treating the effects of a wide variety of foot conditions, including:

  • Arthritis

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Achilles tendinitis

  • Heel pain

  • Bunions

  • Hammertoes

  • Clawed toes

  • Flat feet / Low arches

  • High arches

  • Neuroma

  • Metatarsalgia

  • Forefoot pain

  • Arch pain

  • Corns and calluses

  • Diabetes

  • Neuropathic wounds

  • Back pain

  • Hip pain

  • Knee pain

  • Ankle pain

  • Shin splints

  • Sciatica

  • In-toeing or out-toeing

Are custom orthotics covered under my insurance plan?

Most plans have partial or full coverage for custom orthotics. We recommend giving your insurance provider a call ahead of time to be sure of how your coverage works. If you need an estimate, we can provide one. Some plans may require a referral from your family doctor in order for you to be reimbursed.

Are custom orthotics covered by OHIP?

Like all services offered by chiropodists, custom orthotics are not covered by OHIP. However, most extended health insurance plans cover the cost of orthotics in part or in whole.

Is there a warranty or adjustment period?

Just like eyeglasses prescriptions, orthotic prescriptions can change too! It is important to have your feet regularly checked to see whether your orthotic devices continue to be effective. In the unlikely event that your custom made foot orthotics need an adjustment, all follow-up orthotic appointments are covered during our four-month warranty period. We want to make sure your orthotics are working!

We recommend a follow-up after one month, to see how you are doing with your orthotics. Contact us if you are having persisting problems or pain, your orthotics may require an adjustment or modification.

Can I have a second set of custom orthotics ?

Do you love your custom orthotics? Looking for an additional set of custom orthotics to put in another pair of shoes?

Connect with us within six months of receiving your first pair and get a $100 off when you order a second pair!

Are custom orthotics a good idea for children?

Yes, we also evaluate and address issues experienced by young patients. There is no need for a child to suffer from foot pain.

Additionally, children may require orthotics to prevent future foot and posture issues, even if they're not currently experiencing pain. Many foot conditions are genetic, so if parents have foot problems, their children may be at risk of developing the same issues. Orthotics can help correct these early on, ensuring proper foot development and avoiding long-term complications.

We recognize that children’s feet grow at a rapid rate, so we have instituted an outgrowth program that will ensure your child’s orthotics always fit properly.
