What are foot warts?

A wart is a non-cancerous viral infection of the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus enters the body through a break in the skin, forming a small growth on the surface. Depending on the location, warts may appear as flat with little black dots or as fleshy bumps. Warts are contagious and can spread to others through direct contact or indirectly in moist environments such as pools and showers.

At Newmarket Advanced Foot Clinic and Orthotics, we offer comprehensive care for warts, including various treatment methods tailored to your specific needs. Removing warts can require anywhere from a single treatment to multiple sessions, depending on factors such as the duration of the wart, previous treatments, daily activities, severity, and the status of your immune system. Early detection and prompt treatment can significantly reduce the overall treatment time.

Don't let warts affect your daily life. Contact us today to schedule an appointment and let our experienced team provide the care you need.

Wart Removal Treatment Options

Warts on the bottom of the feet are extremely common and can be very stubborn, often requiring multiple treatments. We offer the following wart removal treatments, listed in order of invasiveness:

Silver Nitrate

Painless but often not effective alone; forms a black surface that peels off in about 3 weeks. Best for those with poor circulation or severe neuropathy. This can take a longer time to see results.

Swift Therapy

Uses microwave energy to target and destroy the virus, stimulating the immune system to clear the infection. Learn more about this highly effective treatment.

Salicylic Acid

Softens and loosens skin layers for easier removal. Requires consistent use to prevent regrowth or spreading.

Trichloracetic Acid

TCA is a strong corrosive acid that destroys the wart by breaking down the proteins in the wart tissue. When applied, it penetrates deep into the layers of the wart, causing the infected skin cells to die and peel away. This process leads to the gradual removal of the wart.

Cantharone

Forms a blister under the wart within 24 hours, removing skin layers and cutting off blood supply, attracting white blood cells to fight the wart.

Immunotherapy Drugs

Stimulates the immune system to target the wart virus. Expensive and not typically used for children.

Needling

Surgical procedure using a hollow needle to trigger an immune response. Usually needs only one session, effective for multiple warts, with results in about 4 months.

Excision (Curettage)

For large or stubborn warts, involves surgically removing the wart with a small spoon-shaped tool after local anesthesia.
